The Waterloo Region District School Board continues to work closely with the Waterloo Regional Police Service regarding the ongoing investigation related to Elmira District Secondary School.

The decision was made to close the school on February 1, out of the concern and well-being of an unidentified individual who contacted school administrators over the weekend. The communication made explicit reference to Elmira District Secondary School, February 1st and raised concerns for the broader school community.

“Ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community members is always our top priority. The closure of the school was a precautionary measure,” said Peter Rubenschuh, Superintendent, Student Achievement and Well-being.

The Waterloo Region District School Board in consultation with Waterloo Region Police Service have undertaken reasonable precautions to address concerns related to student and staff safety.

The school will be open on Tuesday, February 2. Exams for EDSS students that were scheduled for Monday will take place on Tuesday. Tuesday exams will take place on Thursday, February 4. The PD Day on Wednesday remains unchanged.

We thank the Waterloo Regional Police Service and the school community for their work and support.
