Elmira District Secondary School students (EDSS) gave back to their community this holiday season by supporting Woolwich Community Services Christmas Goodwill program. Leadership students helped organize an Angel Tree as well as a toonie drive to support local families.
Paper angels that listed wanted items covered a hand-made tree in the school. “When students saw what local families needed, we often heard, ‘I can do that!’ says Sheri Stover, a leadership teacher at EDSS. “It shows what a supportive community we have at our school.”
The EDSS Angel Tree had lots of students buying gifts to support local families.
Leadership students encouraged their classmates to give back however they could, whether it be donating to the angel tree or giving a toonie. To help entice their generous spirit, the class that donated the most would receive a donut party.
Over ten days, books, toys, stuffed animals, games and sporting equipment filled the halls. Students donated an additional $372 that will be used to buy gift cards. Every donation will be wrapped and packed in hampers for families in need by the dedicated volunteers at Woolwich Community Services.
“I’m new at EDSS, and it was nice to see students and staff get involved,” says Ms. Stover. “I saw students who were so excited to organize an event that involved giving to others and helping to support people in our community. I’m very proud of them.”
