For this piece, I wanted to communicate the message that even though war is over, the lasting effects of it live on and war is not forgotten. In my drawing, a veteran sits at a dinner table with his family. The veteran’s family is in the pre-war setting, unchanged and unaffected by war. You could also interpret them as having lived through the war times, but still looking the same because they did not experience it firsthand. The veteran appears in his uniform reflecting on his memories from the war, showing how after you are part of the war you are never really the same. The veteran sitting with his family at the table further represents that it may be difficult to go back to “normal life” after experiencing battle. In sum, it is important for us to remember war because of the sacrifices made and the lives changed for our freedom. Even though the war is over, we can never really go back to before experiencing all of the grief.
